Hello Students and Families,
Thank you so much for your flexibility and patience as we embark together on distance learning in a virtual environment. I want to thank you for a great first week and communicate some new important information with you. End of 3rd Quarter: Grades, Missing Assignments & Grading Day: This week on Thursday, April 9 Quarter 3 closes, and students will be assigned their current grade. All online distance learning this week and next week is supplemental and ungraded. This work will NOT be included in students’ Quarter 3 grades. All work recorded in Quarter 3 is from when we were attending classes in the school building through Friday, March 13. If a student has missing assignments, they can work on those missing assignments online and email me a scanned copy or picture of the completed work to turn into me. Once I have received any missing or late work, I will update assignments in StudentVue/ ParentVue. The deadline to submit any late or missing work for 3rd Quarter is Thursday, April 9 at 5:00 PM. PDFs of all of my assignments can be found on the website I have used this year through Friday, March 13. msgiobetti.weebly.com, and my email to send missing or late work is: [email protected]. Friday, April 10 is a Grade Prep/ Teacher Work Day. There is No School, which means that students will not have any online lessons, and I will not have my daily office hours of 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Quarter 3 grades will then be posted. Student HSD Email Accounts: Students please make sure that you are checking your HSD school email accounts regularly. You are likely getting messages with important information from your teachers, invitations to sign up for digital learning platforms like Google Classroom and Khan Academy, and possibly even invitations to personal appointment requests such as a Student-Teacher Google Meetup. To access your HSD email account from home, please go to the following address to log in remotely: http://mail.hsd.k12.or.us. From there, you will be prompted for your username and password, and will then have access to a cloud-based version of our e-mail system. If you need your password reset, please contact one of your teachers. Google Classroom: Almost everyone is enrolled in our Google Classroom, which is awesome! If you are not enrolled, your school email should have an invite waiting for you. Please sign into your HSD school email immediately to get enrolled. Google Classroom is the platform where I will post all assignments and activities moving forward.
Khan Academy: I have invited each Google Classroom to the Khan Academy, and many students are now enrolled in their class’s section. There are still quite a few students that still need to visit http://khanacademy.org and choose “Sign up” to officially enroll to start! If you have problems logging in, please e-mail me. April 13 - New Lessons Begin: It is looking like there is a really good chance that starting April 13, we switch from reviewing content to learning some new material. This means that assignments would be graded. I’m not exactly sure what this will look like. We are working hard and collaborating as a math team to figure this out. Stay tuned! Thank you again for your patience, flexibility, and support! And as always, please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns.
Mantente saludable, Lauren Lawson

Hello Parents and Students,
Welcome back to school, virtually! This is a different time and all of us (parents, teachers and students alike) are trying our best to accommodate the measures that were put in place. Because of this, school will look a little different now. As long as we all work together, we should have no problem continuing our education. Before I go through my expectations and class procedures, I want you all to remember that the entire country is trying to do exactly what we are. Therefore, please don’t worry or stress about getting behind in school. Everyone is in the same boat so all we can do is work on reviewing what we have learned so we have a solid understanding moving forward. Google Classroom: Hopefully you have all received an email about google classroom prior to our extended spring break. ALL students should have logged into their class periods google classroom, and if you haven’t yet, your school email should have an invite waiting for you. Google classroom will be the platform that I will post all assignments and activities. I will post all of the assignments for the week at once. They will be posted Monday mornings at 8:30 am. Everything will be due by the end of each week. I will be using the “End of the Week” reflection forms as a way to “report” attendance. Following district AND state policies, work will not be graded and will only be a review of content learned already this year. The first assignment for our new learning process will be posted Tuesday evening (March 31st), and will be due Friday (April 2nd). Here are some expectations for students: 1. Please log in at least twice a week to complete assignments. All PDFs that I load onto google classroom will be editable – meaning you can type your answers right on the document. 2. Submit everything to google classroom. If it is an assignment, please submit it. I will make sure to respond to you with feedback as quick as possible. Parents: If you would like to be added as a guardian for google classroom, please email back your preferred email address, students first/last name, and period number. Here are the class periods again if you need them: Period 1: wvzdu5h Period 3: s2qwdpd Period 4: rmjnm62 Period 5: g4nsz6t Period 6: tjxccfn Office Hours: I will be available every day (Monday through Friday) from 10-11 am. During this time, parents and students can email me any questions to get an immediate response, call/text me @ 971-238-7860, or request a virtual face to face meeting. These hours may change after May 1 if we are still virtually teaching. You can also request a meeting time outside of these hours. If you wish to do this, please email me your request and I’ll try my best to accommodate. You can also click the following link to schedule an appointment with me here. Chromebooks/Digital Access: If you do not have means to access the internet at home, you may request paper copies of all material. Please email me in response so I am aware and can get you the material you need. If you need a Chromebook, EMS will checking out Chromebooks in the EMS lobby during the following dates and times: Tuesday, March 31st 8am-3pm Wednesday, April 1st 8am-12pm Thursday, April 2nd, 8am-12pm Friday, April 3rd, 8am-12pm Parent- Frequently Asked Questions Linked here is our running (live and updated frequently) document of parent questions that the math department has received over the last couple of weeks. We would appreciate you checking this list for your questions. If you have a question that is not listed here, please feel free to reach out! We will be keeping this updated throughout the next couple of weeks. I have also linked this in your students google classroom so you always have access to it. As usual, please let me know if you have any questions! Stay healthy, Lauren Lawson For those of you who are interested in going through our textbooks on your own time, the curriculum has opened up all of their textbooks online until June 30th. All books are provided in English and ESP (Spanish).
open-ebooks.cpm.org Core 1- 6th grade Core 2- 7th grade Core 3- 8th grade Algebra This is not required! I have had a few parents inquire about it, so I thought I would share. Hope you're all having a healthy spring break! -Mrs. Lawson Good afternoon!
As you know, our school is heading into an extended Spring Break. To help with the concern of getting work done, I've decided not to assign any work over this two week break. Instead, I would love for your student to finish any missing work that they have. To do so, they can go to my classroom website: msgiobetti.weebly.com . If you do not have a printer at home, your child can complete the assignments on a separate sheet of paper. If you want to see an updated grade over the break, please email me a picture of their work and I will update accordingly. It would be so nice to come back from the break to see almost all of our missing assignments turned in! In case of an extended break (after April 1st), our district might have to put "online learning" in place. Students who were at school today were able to get signed up for some google classrooms that I had set up in case we need to go this route. If your student was not at school, here are the following class codes: Period 1: wvzdu5h Period 3: s2qwdpd Period 4: rmjnm62 Period 5: g4nsz6t Period 6: tjxccfn If your student is concerned about their Math 7 test that was taken over Thursday/Friday... many students were absent and missed the test, many students missed one day and were not able to finish their test, and my 6th period didn't get one of the testing days due to a speaker we had invited to our building. I'm concerned about waiting until after the break to finish these tests, and don't want students grades to be dramatically changed if they didn't get to finish the test. Therefore, I've decided to hold off on grading the tests. When we return, we will be taking a look over the tests together in class. I'm not completely sure what that will look like yet, but please be calm in knowing that this test will not be impacting student grades. I know that was a concern for many students! If your Accelerated student is concerned about missing the retake for their Unit 7 test, I will follow up with them when we get back from the break about when they would like to complete the retake, this way they can prepare themselves for it. If you would like for your student to get some extra practice over the break over math concepts that we are working on in class, another math teacher in our building, Mrs. Mahar has a great list running of Khanacademy lessons and practice problems (for math 7 AND accelerated 7). Here is where you can access that: https://maharmath.weebly.com/unit-test-information.html This list includes resources from past units as well! Please take advantage of this!! Let me know if you have any questions. I will be available by email over this extended break and will try to get back to you as soon as I can! I hope you and your families are able to stay healthy during this time. Thank you, Lauren Lawson Period 1: wvzdu5h
Period 3: s2qwdpd Period 4: rmjnm62 Period 5: g4nsz6t Period 6: tjxccfn Good afternoon!
I wanted to email to let you all know that I have passed back the Unit 5 tests today. These scores are lower than what students expected on the test. I believe it is because students relied to heavily on the test being exactly like the study guide, instead of using the study guide as a guide to what should be on the test. Therefore, they were misreading a lot of the questions, just assuming what the outcome should be. Due to low scores across all of my classes, I've decided on an in class retake for unit 5. This way, more students will access the retake instead of choosing a low grade over giving up their lunch time. Students were able to get started on their corrections today in class. They have until Tuesday, February 25th to turn in these corrections. Their retake will be in class on Wednesday, the 26th. If your student only needs to only retake a problem or two, chooses not to retake, or doesn't need to due to a high score, I will have an extension activity for them to individually work on that day. Please check Parentvue/Studentvue to see your student's current grades. There are a LOT of missing assignments already for this quarter. If students are not doing the work to prepare (which they get more than enough class time to work on) then they aren't going to be successful on the test. More than half the worksheets that are in the gradebook were broken up to be worked on in class, over multiple days. I feel like I'm giving them more than enough time to work on them, so it's up to them to finish them or ask for help. Please, please, please encourage them to get their work done. If you need extra copies of the assignments, you can find them on my website: msgiobetti.weebly.com As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Lauren Lawson Good Morning!
Welcome back from break. We're going to hit the ground running when it comes to finishing up our Unit 4. I had sent out an email prior to break letting you know my estimated test date, and I have confirmed it to be Monday, January 13th. Students will be receiving their blue test info page tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7th. If they want to use ANY notes on their test, this page is the only resource that they get to use! Please make sure they are working on it over the next week and that they don't lose it! Due to timing, I'm going to give students their study guides on Wednesday, January 8th. I plan on giving them class time on Friday to work on the study guide as well as go over the answers. I will make sure to post copies of the answer key on my website on Friday, so that way if your student is absent, they can still go over the answers prior to the test. If your student was out any time before break (due to vacation or illness) all copies of missed work and the agenda is on my classroom website: msgiobetti.weebly.com As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you so much, Lauren (Giobetti) Lawson Happy Holidays!
I hope everyone has a wonderful break, where we can all rest up and get healthy for the new year! I'm going to send out grade reports at the end of the day so that way you know what your student needs to work on over break. Today (Friday), we have been made aware of what we are missing and spent the class period getting caught up. If your student still has missing work, please continue to work on this over break. If you need copies of the assignments, you can find them on my website: msgiobetti.weebly.com If you don't have a printer, students can still work on the assignments by copying the problems onto a piece of paper. When we return from break, we are going to be working on another standard for the first week (including review) and then we will test on Unit 4 in the following week. I'm aiming for January 13/14 for the unit test. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Lauren (Giobetti) Lawson Good afternoon!
I just wanted to give a few updates for all of my classes. Both of my classes will be taking their unit tests next week, on Tuesday. This means that students will be getting their study guide and their blue test sheet tomorrow! Math 7 study guide: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KymMcQ6iBUmvXpopJU242RDzo11i4MOvab2MLm0RVa4 Accelerate 7 study guide: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oANAGla1n9DJHGlNxTZC1iCCJHton6NbakTyCv1eaOg/edit?usp=sharing Please make sure your student is staying caught up on their work. Around the holidays is when we see an increase in missing work. I will be sending another email with your student's current grade. If they have any missing assignments, I encourage them to try to work on them over the long weekend. Please encourage them to get the work done as well! That's the best way to practice for the test! Thank you! Lauren (Giobetti) Lawson Good morning!
As a math department, we are always collaborating to reflect on and improve our practice. We are making some changes moving forward to the way we will assign and check study guides and give assessments. Students will receive a traditional study guide with similar questions to the test. The study guide will be handed out at least one week before the test is scheduled. Students will be responsible for completing the study guide at home. 1-2 questions from the study guide will be assigned per night and reviewed the following day. The entire study guide will have been checked before the test is given. Study guides will be collected before the test is administered as usual; students cannot use the study guide on the test day. Students will no longer be able to use all INB notes on their tests. Each student will receive one sheet of colored paper from the teacher to write any important notes, math formulas, examples, or other key information. Rewriting notes helps students remember the information better and helps them review information so it is fresh in their minds. If students find missing information or things they don’t understand, it gives them the opportunity to clarify with the teacher or a peer. Students will need to prioritize the most helpful information for them to include on the sheet. Students will only be allowed to use information written on this sheet on the test day. All of my classes will be taking their Unit 2 test on Wednesday, October 30th. As that week will be the end of Quarter 1, this test will not be put on their Q1 grade, and instead will be the first grade entered for Quarter 2. I will be passing out their study guides today (October 23rd) and they will be assigned a couple problems to work on as homework. It is their responsibility to not lose the study guide, as it will still be entered as a homework grade. On Friday, they will receive their blue test info page. This will be the page that they can write down any information that they feel they will need as notes for the test. They will not be able to use their INB on the test but will be able to use the blue sheet. This info page must be turned in with their test- this way they are using their own and not a peers. If they don't have it with them, I will make note of it. Students will only receive one copy of the blue test paper, so again, it is their responsibility to not lose it. If they do, they will not receive another sheet, and cannot use other papers for notes. I will be reviewing all of this new information with students tomorrow during class. I just wanted to make sure I pushed out parent communication first. As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you, Lauren Giobetti (Lawson) |
