Good morning!
As a math department, we are always collaborating to reflect on and improve our practice. We are making some changes moving forward to the way we will assign and check study guides and give assessments. Students will receive a traditional study guide with similar questions to the test. The study guide will be handed out at least one week before the test is scheduled. Students will be responsible for completing the study guide at home. 1-2 questions from the study guide will be assigned per night and reviewed the following day. The entire study guide will have been checked before the test is given. Study guides will be collected before the test is administered as usual; students cannot use the study guide on the test day. Students will no longer be able to use all INB notes on their tests. Each student will receive one sheet of colored paper from the teacher to write any important notes, math formulas, examples, or other key information. Rewriting notes helps students remember the information better and helps them review information so it is fresh in their minds. If students find missing information or things they don’t understand, it gives them the opportunity to clarify with the teacher or a peer. Students will need to prioritize the most helpful information for them to include on the sheet. Students will only be allowed to use information written on this sheet on the test day. All of my classes will be taking their Unit 2 test on Wednesday, October 30th. As that week will be the end of Quarter 1, this test will not be put on their Q1 grade, and instead will be the first grade entered for Quarter 2. I will be passing out their study guides today (October 23rd) and they will be assigned a couple problems to work on as homework. It is their responsibility to not lose the study guide, as it will still be entered as a homework grade. On Friday, they will receive their blue test info page. This will be the page that they can write down any information that they feel they will need as notes for the test. They will not be able to use their INB on the test but will be able to use the blue sheet. This info page must be turned in with their test- this way they are using their own and not a peers. If they don't have it with them, I will make note of it. Students will only receive one copy of the blue test paper, so again, it is their responsibility to not lose it. If they do, they will not receive another sheet, and cannot use other papers for notes. I will be reviewing all of this new information with students tomorrow during class. I just wanted to make sure I pushed out parent communication first. As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you, Lauren Giobetti (Lawson)
